MANDALA – A CONTEMPORARY CIRCLING
/ˈmandələ,ˈmʌndələ/
from Sanskrit maṇḍala ‘disc or circle’
According to Carl Jung ‘A mandala is the psychological expression of the totality of the self’
The circular designs of Ross‘s textile Mandalas reflect the wholeness of the artist, they are a visual representation of the search for completeness. Traditionally, the colours have symbolic meanings suggesting different spiritual and emotional qualities. For these mandalas, Ross has used fabrics that span his time as an artist, from his current exploration of contact printing with natural dyes back to some of his earliest rust experiments.
The Mandalas were exhibited at the Festival of Quilts which ran from the 1st to the 4th of August 2019 at the NEC, Birmingham.
